As always, at the beginning of this month Google rolled out the January security updates
for the Nexus and Pixel devices it still supports. Today, however, the
company has published three new images for specific carrier versions of
certain handsets. It's an unprecedented move, this, and we're not sure
what prompted it - perhaps some carrier-related functions haven't been
working after applying the original January updates, or maybe there were
certain other nasty bugs hiding in there.
Anyway, if you have a Pixel 2 on Verizon, a Nexus 6P on SoftBank, or a Nexus 5X on SoftBank or Telstra, you should probably go ahead and install the respective new build for your phone.
Factory images and full OTA zip files are up for grabs from Google's
dedicated developer website (see the Source links below), and we assume
an over-the-air rollout of the new updates is imminent. The new build
numbers are OPM2.171019.016 for the Verizon Pixel 2, and OPM5.171019.014
for the Nexus 6P on SoftBank as well as the Nexus 5X on both Telstra
and SoftBank.
